3 · USGS WaterData — Monitoring Stations, Parameters & Time-Series

Reads the watershed boundaries from notebook 1, discovers the USGS monitoring stations inside them via the new USGS Water Data API, and records which priority parameters each station measured. Primary source & API docs: https://api.waterdata.usgs.gov/.

Step 2 — Discover monitoring stations

We load the watershed boundaries saved by notebook 1, ask the Water Data API for every station in their bounding box, then keep only those that fall within the watershed polygons (a spatial join).

Caching note: dataretrieval.waterdata makes its own HTTP requests, bypassing the on-disk request cache (cache/) HyRiver calls use — so Steps 2-3 treat the final saved usgs_monitoring_locations_parameters.parquet as a backup cache (load_dataframe, one-week freshness window): if it’s still fresh, both steps’ fetches are skipped entirely.

Step 4 — Fetch the time-series records

For the stations that actually have data, fetch the full available record of the priority parameters from three USGS Water Data services (docs: https://api.waterdata.usgs.gov/) and save one tidy (long-format) table per data type. Daily values and field measurements filter by USGS parameter_code; discrete samples are keyed by characteristic name, so we fetch all and keep rows whose characteristic maps to a priority group. (Analysis later subsets to the 25-year study window — we keep everything.) Each fetch_*/tidy_* pair (from _helpers/usgs.py) is shown below: first the raw API response, then the tidy result actually saved — each pair is skipped when its own saved product is still fresh (same load_dataframe-as-backup-cache pattern as Steps 2-3).

Step 8 — Export to Excel

Compiles all six saved tables into a single downloadable workbook — one sheet each, frozen header row + first column, with autofilter enabled on the header. usgs_monitoring_locations (the pre-classification station table) is reconstructed by dropping the columns Step 3 added, since by this point only the enriched station table still exists in memory — this works the same whether the station data came from a fresh fetch or the cache above. save_workbook strips timezone info from any tz-aware datetime column (e.g. samples/field’s UTC datetime, as returned by the USGS Water Data API) before writing, since Excel has no timezone-aware datetime type — the saved parquet/CSV keep the original tz-aware values.
